DR CONGO AND M23 SIGN CEASEFIRE DECLARATION IN QATAR TO END FIGHTING

A major peace breakthrough has been reached in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, as the government and M23 rebels signed a principle agreement in Doha, mediated by Qatar. The deal includes a permanent ceasefire, protection of civilians, and respect for DRC’s territorial sovereignty. though welcomed by locals in Goma and the international community, many residents remain cautiously hopeful, stressing the need for real, lasting peace.
The M23, accused of receiving support from Rwanda, has controlled parts of North Kivu since January. The agreement prohibits military offensives and sets up a monitoring mechanism. Further negotiations are expected, aiming for a comprehensive peace accord by mid-2026. Civil society and political leaders view the deal as a vital step toward resolving years of conflict and displacement in the region.
