SSANU THREATENS STRIKE OVER MARGINALISATION, UNPAID ALLOWANCES

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, has warned that it will embark on a total and comprehensive nationwide strike in 2026 if the Federal Government fails to conclude renegotiations and present a “credible and realistic” offer to non-teaching staff by December 31. The warning followed the union’s 53rd National Executive Council meeting held at the University of Jos where SSANU reviewed the state of the nation and conditions across Nigerian universities.
SSANU National President Mohammed Ibrahim on Monday, accused the government of persistent marginalization of non-teaching staff, particularly in the payment of Earned Allowances and in ongoing renegotiation processes. The union demanded the immediate release of the ₦50 billion agreed upon in the 2022 Memorandum of understanding , with Inter-University Centres and research institutes included in the next disbursement.
SSANU also raised alarm over rising insecurity in schools, citing recent abductions in Niger and Kebbi States, and called for modern surveillance systems, improved perimeter protection, and upgraded campus security architecture. The union rejected proposed public-private partnership arrangements for essential services in universities, warning that such reforms could lead to job losses and inferior working conditions.
