OSUN NDLEA DEPUTY STATE COMMANDER CALLS FOR COLLECTIVE ACTION AGAINST DRUG ABUSE AMONG YOUTHS

A National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Osun State Commander, DCM Adegoke Oluwatoyin, has called for increased public awareness and collective efforts to tackle drug abuse among youths in Nigeria.

Speaking on a programme on Vicinity 95.3 FM, Ikeji-Ile Ijesa, Osun State, she warned that drug abuse poses serious dangers to young people and society, noting that the use of drugs by drivers can lead to road accidents and endanger the lives of motorists and other road users.

Adegoke explained that the NDLEA carries out public enlightenment, drug-related law enforcement and efforts aimed at reducing drug abuse. She added that rehabilitation services are available for people struggling with substance misuse, where they can receive counselling, medical attention and detoxification.

She said drug-related assessments, including blood and urine tests, help medical personnel identify substances used by affected individuals and determine appropriate treatment. She also stressed the importance of family cooperation, particularly parental support, in helping affected youths recover.

The NDLEA official noted that identifying drug abuse and addiction is part of the training of agency personnel. She further emphasised that creating awareness is essential, as many young people, particularly females, may not fully understand the dangers and consequences of drug abuse.

Adegoke identified peer pressure, ignorance, psychological stress and the desire to make quick money as some of the factors that contribute to drug abuse. She also expressed concern about the influence of drug use and the illegal drug trade on young people.

She urged parents and guardians to pay closer attention to their children’s behaviour and seek help when they notice signs of substance misuse, adding that early intervention can help prevent addiction from worsening.

She called on the NDLEA, parents and community leaders to work together to promote a peaceful and drug-free society, warning that drug abuse can contribute to crime and other social problems, including robbery, cybercrime, kidnapping and cult-related activities.
