FEDERAL GOVERNMENT INAUGURATES COMMITTEE TO ENFORCE NATIONWIDE SINGLE-USE PLASTICS BAN

Federal Government has inaugurated a 14-member Inter-Ministerial Committee to enforce the nationwide ban on Single-Use Plastics (SUP), marking a major step toward environmental sustainability and improved waste management. The development was announced in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Director of Information and Public Relations, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF), Segun Imohiosen.
The committee will oversee the phase-out of items like PET bottles, plastic bags, sachet water, straws, and styrofoam. The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, represented by the Permanent Secretary overseeing the General Services Office, Mohammed Danjuma at the inauguration in Abuja, said the ban reflects the country’s commitment to global environmental standards and aims to reduce plastic pollution that threatens public health, ecosystems, and marine life.
The committee are representatives from key ministries, regulatory bodies, and industry associations, among others have been given the the mandate to investigate issues related to single-use plastics, assess the benefits of the ban, and promote best environmental practices across the plastics value chain.
The move comes amid ongoing international efforts to establish a legally binding treaty on plastic pollution.
