GUINEA JUNTA PROPOSES EXTENDED PRESIDENTIAL TERMS IN NEW LAW DRAFT

Guinea’s transitional government presented a draft of its new constitution to the head of transitional government general Mamady Doumbouya, set for a referendum in September.
The move is regarded as a first step towards a return to constitutional rule, following the coup that brought military junta into power
According to report, similar to previous constitutions, the draft showed changes to presidential term increased from five to seven years, with a limit of two terms.
besides the changes to the presidential term, the draft also introduced the creation of a Senate where a third of its members would be directly appointed by the head of state.
Recall, Guinea has been headed by a transitional government since a military coup ousted president Alpha Conde in 2021.
