BRAZIL’S SUPREME COURT ORDERS BOLSONARO TO BEGIN 27-YEAR PRISON SENTENCE FOR COUP PLOT

Brazil’s Supreme Court has ordered former president Jair Bolsonaro to serve a 27-year and three-month prison sentence for orchestrating a failed coup attempt following his 2022 election loss to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Justice Alexandre de Moraes confirmed that the ruling is final, with no further appeals allowed. Bolsonaro, 70, has been held in a federal police facility in Brasília since Saturday after being removed from home detention as a flight risk. The court found he led a conspiracy that included plans to assassinate Lula, Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, and Justice Moraes, and incited supporters who stormed government buildings in January 2023.
Bolsonaro called the trial a “witch hunt” and has been barred from holding public office until 2060. Other co-conspirators, including former ministers have been ordered to begin serving their sentences. The ruling marks a historic moment as Brazil seeks to uphold democratic order and accountability.
