INEC Chairman Pledges to End Excessive Pre-Election Litigations Undermining Democracy.

The new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Professor Joash Amupitan, has vowed to end the culture of excessive pre-election litigations that has long undermined the country’s democracy.
Amupitan at the 56th Annual Conference of the Nigerian Association of Law Teachers at the University of Abuja, said his top priority is to stop “courtroom warfare” that often begins before elections. He noted that over 1,000 pre-election cases were filed ahead of the 2023 polls.
Amupitan urged political parties to obey their constitutions and the Electoral Act, stressing that democracy must be won at the polling units, not in the courts and called on the National Assembly to strengthen electoral laws and restore public confidence in the system.
Addressing law teachers and jurists, he challenged the legal community to promote integrity and justice in national development. Academic leaders at the event commended Amupitan’s reform vision, calling it a vital step toward strengthening the country’s democracy.
