The Cross River State Government has shut down over 28 schools operating without the required approval in four local government areas as part of efforts to enforce compliance with education regulations.
The affected schools are located in Calabar Municipality, Calabar South, Odukpani and Akamkpa Local Government Areas.
In a statement issued by the State Ministry of Information and Orientation on Saturday, through the commissioner Stephen Odey warned that proprietors who violate the closure order would face sanctions, while affected schools must not reopen without government authorization.
The exercise would be extended to all 18 local government areas of the state to ensure that schools meet established standards and provide pupils with a properly regulated learning environment.
The state government has also urged school proprietors to obtain the necessary approval before commencing operations, assuring that monitoring and enforcement activities would continue across the state.
