FAMILIES OF 37 SUSPECTED ILLEGAL MINERS DEMAND JUSTICE, COMPENSATION

Families of 37 suspected illegal miners who died in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, in Niger State, have demanded justice and compensation.

The bereaved families alleged that they were denied access to their loved ones while in detention, despite several attempts to visit or take food to them. They said they only learnt of the deaths later.

Some relatives also raised concerns over the condition of the bodies, alleging that some had foam and blood around their mouths.

Meanwhile, the Federal Government’s Independent Committee of Inquiry has commenced investigation into the incident, with its medical team working to establish the causes and manner of the deaths.
