In honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, in London at the age of 82, the Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a public holiday across the nation.
The declaration follows a seven-day national mourning period announced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, and was officially communicated by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on Monday. The Minister noted that the holiday serves as a mark of respect for the former President’s service to Nigeria, his role in shaping the nation’s democracy, and his enduring contributions to national development.
“President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of our great nation,” said Tunji-Ojo. “This public holiday provides an opportunity for all Nigerians to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he upheld.”
The funeral of the late President will take place on Tuesday, July 15, in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State. According to Bashir Ahmad, former presidential aide, Buhari’s body is expected to arrive in Katsina by 12:00 noon, with burial rites scheduled for 2:00 p.m., in line with Islamic traditions.
Vice President Kashim Shettima and Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila are currently in London and will accompany the late president’s remains back to Nigeria.
In addition to the holiday and funeral, national flags across the country will continue to fly at half-mast until Saturday, July 20, as a sign of national mourning.
The Federal Government extended heartfelt condolences to the late President’s family, the people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians, praying for the peaceful repose of his soul.
