GUINEA-BISSAU SWEARS IN TRANSITIONAL LEADER FOLLOWING COUP

The country’s army’s chief of staff, General Horta N’Tam has been sworn in as transitional leader for a one-year period.
While, Guinea-Bissau’s President, Umaro Sissoco Embaló has arrived safely in Senegal after being released by the military forces that deposed his government earlier this week. Senegal’s foreign ministry confirmed his arrival on Thursday night, following negotiations led by the regional West African bloc Ecowas
The coup unfolded just a day before provisional results were expected from tightly contested presidential and parliamentary elections. The military has since suspended the electoral process, blocked release of the results, and imposed a night curfew, claiming it acted to prevent an alleged plot backed by a “well-known drug baron.”
International condemnation continues to mount, Ecowas has suspended Guinea-Bissau from all its decision-making bodies and demanded the military return to the barracks. The African Union, denounced the coup, and United Nation Secretary-General, António Guterres has called for the immediate and unconditional restoration of constitutional order.
