The Independent National Electoral Commission has express readiness to deploy artificial intelligence tools to verify election results and detect discrepancies ahead of Nigeria’s forthcoming 2027 general elections nationwide.
INEC Chairman, Joash Amupitan, disclosed this Tuesday in Abuja while presenting the commission’s preparations at a World Press Conference and National Stakeholders Meeting
The commission has established an Artificial Intelligence Division within its ICT Department and integrated automated auditing tools into its results verification process for 2027 nationwide.
Amupitan said the system will operate under mandatory human oversight, while INEC finalises an AI governance framework covering transparency, accountability, privacy, cybersecurity and public trust.
The initiative also targets election-related disinformation, including deepfakes, cloned voices, fabricated result sheets and forged documents capable of undermining confidence in genuine electoral information online.
