The death of a man identified simply as Toheeb has triggered violence in Ikirun, Osun State, following the discovery of his body in an abandoned well.
The incident has led to the burning of houses belonging to some suspects, while the police have arrested ten people in connection with the alleged murder and arson.
According to reports, Toheeb was allegedly accused of theft and beaten by some residents before he fled the scene. A community source claimed that a local security volunteer, identified as Gani, later chased and allegedly killed him.
The source further alleged that Toheeb’s body was dumped in an abandoned well and covered with sand.
Following the discovery of the body, some residents reportedly attacked the homes of the suspected perpetrators and their relatives, setting several houses ablaze.
The Osun State Police Command confirmed the arrests. Police spokesperson Abiodun Ojelabi said six suspects had been arrested in connection with the alleged murder, while four others were apprehended over the arson.
The police urged residents to allow the law to take its course rather than resort to jungle justice.
