The Presidential Working Group says the proposed National Policing Bill will be transmitted to the National Assembly within the next two weeks.
Chief of Staff to the President and Chairman of the Working Group, Femi Gbajabiamila, disclosed this while briefing journalists after a steering committee meeting at the State House in Abuja.
The meeting had in attendance the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq; Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun; Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani; and Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, among other government officials
Gbajabiamila described the bill as the most consequential bill of the Tinubu administration noting that it had undergone intensive deliberations since the committee began work on August 3.
On the proposed constitutional amendment to establish state police, he expressed confidence that the process would progress, citing a national consensus on the need for the reforms.
His remarks come amid reports that only about six states had approved the amendment out of the 36 states, raising concerns about the pace of its passage.
