Following the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, stakeholders’ meeting held yesterday, a public affairs commentator, Prince Uberu Oluwatuyi, has called for better welfare and remuneration for INEC officials, saying they deserve adequate compensation for the responsibilities attached to their duties. He noted that the work of INEC officials is demanding and requires proper motivation to ensure credible election outcomes.
Speaking on the Good Morning Nigeria programme of Vicinity 95.3 FM via phone call, Prince Uberu stressed that INEC officials must remain independent of political and other forms of interference. He said the electoral body’s personnel should be given special consideration through proper welfare and allowances, while urging them to uphold integrity and professionalism in the discharge of their duties.
Reacting to the African Action Congress, AAC, presidential candidate’s Omoyele Sowore, demand for a minimum wage of five hundred thousand naira for staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Prince Uberu said a high salary does not necessarily determine the integrity or transparency of electoral officials. He urged INEC personnel to demonstrate integrity in their work, noting that their commitment to credible elections would contribute to determining the future of Nigeria.
