FLOODING: ENVIRONMENTAL SANITATION OFFICER RAISES CONCERNS OVER POOR SANITATION, IMPROPER CONSTRUCTION

An environmental health officer, Sanitarian Samuel Odeyemi has identified improper construction, particularly along riverbanks, and poor environmental sanitation as major causes of flooding in communities across Nigeria.

Speaking on the Good Morning Nigeria programme on Vicinity 95.3 FM, Ipetu-Ijesa, Comrade Odeyemi warned that flooding could worsen food insecurity through the destruction of farmlands and agricultural produce.

He urged residents to maintain proper sanitation, dispose of waste responsibly and avoid activities that obstruct waterways.

The analyst also called on governments at all levels to recruit more Environmental Health Officers and Sanitary Inspectors to monitor sanitation practices and help reduce the impact of flooding on communities.
