Supreme Court Upholds Election of Governor Okpebholo, Dismisses PDP Candidate’s Appeal

Supreme Court today, Thursday upheld the election of Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State, dismissing an appeal filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Asuerinme Ighodalo, as lacking in merit.
A five-member panel led by Justice Mohammed Garba delivered a unanimous judgment, affirming the earlier decisions of the Court of Appeal and the Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, which declared Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) the valid winner of the September 21, 2024, governorship election.
Recall, both the tribunal and the Court of Appeal had dismissed the PDP’s petition for lack of evidence.
Therefore, INEC has declared Okpebholo winner of the election with 291,667 votes, ahead of Ighodalo, who garnered 247,655 votes. The Supreme Court’s ruling brings the legal battle over the election to a close, solidifying Okpebholo’s mandate as the duly elected governor of Edo State.
