Ethiopian federal forces have taken full control of Mekelle, the capital of the Tigray region, after Tigray People’s Liberation Front, TPLF, leaders and troops abandoned the city.
The renewed fighting between federal forces and the TPLF began on September 23, raising fears of a return to the devastating 2020-to-2022 civil war. Communications in Mekelle were restored on Sunday, with federal troops patrolling the city and manning key government institutions.
Meanwhile, the presidents of Egypt, Somalia, Sudan and Eritrea met in Egypt to discuss the growing tensions. They called for regional disputes to be resolved peacefully and urged respect for international law and non-interference in the internal affairs of Horn of Africa countries.
