The Federal Government has announced a 250-million-naira support package for the families of the 37 young men who died in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, in Niger State.
Vice President Kashim Shettima announced the support during a condolence visit to the state, describing the deaths as unfortunate and a matter of national concern. He said the Federal Government owes the families justice and answers, stressing that those responsible must be held accountable through due process.
Shettima also urged the people of Niger State not to politicise the tragedy, while commending Governor Umaru Bago for seeking justice for the victims. Responding, Bago said the state’s demand for justice was not an act of vengeance, but a responsibility to ensure that citizens are protected by those entrusted with their safety.
