FORMER EDUCATION MINISTER EZEKWESILI URGES AFRICAN GOVERNMENTS TO ENFORCE 18-YEAR MINIMUM MARRIAGE AGE

Former Minister of Education, Obiageli Ezekwesili, has urged African governments to enforce 18 years as the minimum age of marriage to protect girls from child marriage

In a statement to mark the International Day of the Girl Child, she warned that child marriage remains a major threat to girls’ education and Nigeria’s human capital development.

The former minister said governments must strengthen legal protections for girls while addressing the educational limitations that increase their vulnerability to early marriage.

Ezekwesili, who is the founder of Human Capital Africa, stressed the need for traditional and religious leaders to support efforts to end the practice.
