Suspected political assassinations in South Africa have claimed at least 43 lives this year, according to a report by the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organised Crime.
The report says 45 politically linked attacks were recorded between January and September 30, targeting politicians, ward councillors, civic groups and traditional leaders.
The killings come ahead of South Africa’s November 4 local government elections, with the report warning that political violence could rise as competition for power intensifies.
Of the 43 victims, 13 were members of The African National Congress (ANC)ANC, party, while eight were linked to former President Jacob Zuma’s MK Party.
