ETHIOPIA AND ERITREA CUT DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS AMID TIGRAY TENSION

Ethiopia and Eritrea have severed diplomatic relations amid renewed fighting in northern Ethiopia, raising fears of a return to the devastating Tigray war.

Ethiopia accused Eritrea of supporting the Tigray People’s Liberation Front and announced plans to expel 10 Eritrean diplomats and close its embassy in Asmara. Eritrea said it had no option but to reciprocate and cut diplomatic ties.

Hundreds have reportedly been killed, and others wounded since fighting resumed last week, while thousands have been displaced. Doctors Without Borders says more than 700 wounded people have been treated in hospitals across Tigray.

The crisis has heightened regional tensions, with an explosion reported at the Ethiopian military headquarters in Addis Ababa. The cause and casualty figures remain unclear, while government forces say they have retaken several towns from Tigrayan fighters.
